Exciting visitor at the kids bus stop today! A honest looking late 80's Defender 90 2.5 Tdi 3 door van. Not even a 50 footer, with obvious mismatched tires (Runway Enduros FTW on the back) and bubbling at the bottom of the door. Still, could be a great project for a Land Rover enthusiast at the right price, and included a few upgrades like the snorkel and LED headlamps. Let’s enhance!
Hmm, seeing some red here and a few shades of green, I don’t think this was a great repaint. That corrosion is pretty obvious.
Oh, there’s some not insiginificant surface rust on the frame...
More red showing and a terrible tint job on the back window.
That’s... quite a bit of rust showing at the bottom corner of the windscreen. So this is maybe (generously) a $8500 truck in the UK, landed in the US, let’s say $12-13K.
But we would be wrong. Very very wrong... 22K OBO....

I’ll offer him an eye- poke, and it may be the best and only offer at that asking price.

If they were smart, they’d consider it. I suspect this may be a husband forced to “sell” by the significant other...

All of this is stuff that can be fixed (I’ve done all those items), but $22k I think not.
I think this is a man who has prioritized glitz and decor at top dollar (the number plate, the other extras, new wheels) and not basic fixes... and now expects to recoup that.

Cut that price in half. This thing is one of the roughest I've seen in driving condition.

I've never understood that. You know your partner's hobbies going into the marriage. You can't just force them to give them up. If a wife "forces" a husband to sell a car, that's not a healthy relationship.

There are a lot of sketchy importers in the DC area that charge top dollar for beater Rovers and I think that may be what happened here
... But yeah $10-12K is reasonable, even with the mods.

Well it can be managed by overpricing the thing.... But yes, I agree, in a perfect world, you’d be ok with each other’s interest.

And it saw very few miles since 2014 (about 3K). Expired MOT is not surprising, a lot of servicemembers in the area, so you do see a lot of stuff brought back with them when they’ve been in the UK. Texas plates (in Virginia) would confirm this as military members register their cars in their state of residence, rather than at their duty station.
Perhaps they are not up to date with the recent Brexit-induced updates to the value of the pound? Though even at 2 pounds to the dollar, this is still way high.
